HINDU BASED EDUCATION
The aim of Hindu based is self realization. Knowledge is the process of awareness and realization of self. This is to help the student to become the best person he can be.
The teacher is a guide, model and a friend who stimulates and inspires the continuous process of realization. A person should work hard on the following: self – control, development of character, generation of sociability or social awareness, integral development of personality, propagation of purity, preservation of knowledge and culture and realization of own self or the realization of Ultimate Reality called Brahman.
The students live in their teacher’s house. The teacher or guru was responsible for the child’s moral, mental and physical upbringing The teacher in ancient India was not supposed to imposed anything upon his pupil.
The Prahlada episode in Mahabharata mentions that students are allowed to challenge or defy his teacher who is arrogant, ignorant of his duty and resorts to a wrong course of action.
The teachers were two classes, namely Acharya and Upadhyaya. The first teaches Veda along with ritualistic literature and the Upanishads to his pupils. The later teaches his pupils the Veda and the Vedic literature for livelihood.
Education that time was free. Access to good education does not depend on wealth but on talent. A student is expected, if desired but never compelled to offer a field, cow, horse or the elements of daily needs to his teacher according to his financial position in the society.Education could not be bought, one could go up the ladder as his abilities permitted.
Education during those times insists truthfulness, observance of duty, devotion to the teacher and to one’s parents, hospitality, faith, and generosity. The student called Brahmachari has to follow the rigorous discipline for a prescribed period , during which he has to live at the house of his teacher. His daily routine is begging alms, collecting fuel, looking after the sacrificial fires, tending the house of the teacher, learning and practicing austerities. The maintenance of chastity or celibacy was obligatory on the Brahmachari.
There two types of knowledge in Hindu tradition – one comes from the scriptures and the other from reflection.Spiritual knowledge comes from the study of science ( Veda Shastra – scripture ) and the knowledge of the supreme comes from reflection.
In Philippine contemporary educational system, the aim of Hindu education – self realization can be best seen in teaching and learning Edukasyon Sa Pagpapakatao. The teacher acts as a guide, model and friend who inspires the pupils and students to be the best person that he can be.
In the Sisters of Mary School the idea of self – control, development of character, generation of sociability or social awareness, integral development of personality, propagation of purity, preservation of knowledge and culture and realization of own self or the realization of Ultimate Reality called God is also given so much importance.
It not only in the Sisters of Mary where students with their teachers who happen to be nuns. There are still other students who live in their teacher’s house especially those pupils and students adopted by their teacher. The teacher was likewise responsible for the child’s moral, mental and physical upbringing.
In some cases, like the students of the Sisters of Mary… Students in the school sciences live in the institution and they are taken cared by the persons in charge.
Parochial scholars in different parts of the country live in the campus and usually become parish priests in the different towns after long years of studies.
If there were two types of education in Hindu education, there are also two major tracks in the Philippine educational system for senior high namely academic and technical vocational.
In the contemporary Philippine educational system, education in the public elementary, secondary and tertiary levels are totally for free. There are also students and pupils in the private schools receiving subsidy or scholarship grants from the Philippine government.
Even teachers themselves do receive scholarship grants from different government officials for their masters and doctoral degrees.
Out of school youth and even parents receive free education or free training on livelihood through ALS and TESDA.
